baby sign language works? When is the good time to teach baby sign language?
At this page, I am going to introduce how baby sign language works and what is the good timing to teach sign language to your baby. Majority babies begin to make associations when they are 6 to 8 months. That is the time when they begin to understand that vocalizing endow with power. Here I'd like to introduce how baby sign language works. For example, when your baby is asking something that you didn't give him immediately, Dissatisfaction makes your baby crying, screaming and throwing a tantrum. If the situation happens like this, don't go to comfort him instantly, take a little time to leave your baby alone, then go to serve the thing your baby wants with corresponding signs. Little by little, your baby notices that he makes a sound with signing gestures and you appear immediately. Once it happens, he realizes that sound and signing are powerful --- and that is much more effective than crying. A baby learns that when he cries, you will appear in front of him but you may not give him what he wants, at least not immediately. When he signs, however, he realizes that he gets the results much better than just crying and throwing tantrum . If he makes the sign for EAT, he gets cracker. If he makes the sign for MORE, All Ready, instant service! BUT before any of these results can happen, your baby's cognitive skills have to be well developed in order to make the connection between a certain sign and what it stands for. Also your baby's "memory space" has to be well developed in his brain in order to recall the signs and how to produce them with gesture. There are some tips below for you to catch the good timing to start signing with your baby. 1) Does your baby look at your face intently when you speak to him?
2) When your baby drops a toy, does he wants to figure out where it went?
3) Does your baby curious about what's going on around him by turning around to search for it?
4) When your baby picks up an object does he look to you quizzically as if he is asking for more information?
5)When your baby wants to have certain object, Does he point to that object?
6)Is your baby already gesturing on his own? like waving to say "bye-bye"?
7)Can your baby imitate others' gestures?
If your answered five questions "yes", then it's the right time to teach your baby signing. If your majority answers are "no", I suggest you to wait a few weeks and review these questions again. Here is a fact you should know, babies are making major changes very quickly at infant stage so a few weeks can make big difference.
