Basic Baby Sign Language For Don't Touch

The basic baby sign language I am going to introduce on this page are DON'T TOUCH and GENTLE TOUCHwhich are quite helpful in you and your baby's daily life. They are more important to parents and caregivers than they are to babies. Let's start with the first sign "DON'T TOUCH"

Sign For DON'T TOUCH

DON'T TOUCH is a combination of the sign for NO and the sign for TOUCH. As you might imagine, once your baby begins to roam, it's a sign that you will use frequently by telling you stay away from the dangerous objects that they can not touch.

The Sign for DON'T TOUCH

Don't touch is a combination of NO and TOUCH. Your index and middle fingers snap to the thumb(NO), then your middle finger taps the back of the other hand(TOUCH).

Techniques to teach DON'T TOUCH

1) Just as with any other sign, your baby needs to make an association. When you see him touching something that he shouldn't , then quickly grab his hand, make eye contact, and show him the sign while shaking your head and sternly saying"DON'T TOUCH".

When you sign to your baby, remember to lower the tone of your voice, make stern facial expression.

2) Play "The Untouchables Game" You can begin teaching this sign to your baby the fun way and then get serious later on.

Spread 5 or 6 objects in a row on the floor. They could be your baby's picture books, big or small balls, or your baby's stuffed toys and one wooden one.

Then you touch each object, saying with a happy voice and a smile :" Touch, Touch, Touch, Touch,Touch." When you get to the hardcover book, begin to touch it but quickly pull your hand away. At the same time make your voice much deeper, then say, " DON'T TOUCH" and make the sign at the same time. After showing to your baby several times, you may gently guide your baby through the game again.

If you play this game enough, your baby will make the association plus he will think it's an absolute riot ---- until you play it for real. Sure it is a bit underhanded, but remember that it is for your baby's safety.

3) Another good way is to walk your baby around kitchen touching different things while happily saying," Touch, Touch, Touch", When you get to the stove or toaster, begin to reach out to touch them, then quickly pull your hand away, lower your voice, make a stern face and say/sign :"DON'T TOUCH" . After showing to your baby several times, you may gently guide your baby through the game again.
