Instruction

Step1

Write down an invented rhyme, have the children read them before beginning chanting, such as

Wiggly, squiggly, giggly, piggy, what shall we do? Runny, sunny, funny, bunny, how are you?

Step2

Once you have the children's attention, begin this rhyming activity. Start with a few rhyming words from a acquainted finger play or nursery rhyme, such as sprat, fat, cat, rat, horn, corn. Explain to children that when words sound similar, we say that they rhyme.

Step3

Ask the children to listen carefully when you say some words that rhyme. When they hear you say a word that doesn't rhyme with the others, they should say "hocus, nocus!" To add to the fun, mix in long, funny, or nonsense words as the non-rhyming words.

Step4

Conclude with a rhyming chant to move the group on to the next thing, such as:

One, two, three, we can't wait anymore,Five, six, eight, need to move, can't be late!

Variation

To make the game more challenging, have the children brainstorm their own rhyming words. they can take turns saying a word and seeing how many rhyming words the group can come up with.
