Reading games for teaching 1

Follow my reading games to teach your child to read step by step. Knowing that words are made of chunks of sound is a great beginning for a child who is learning to read, but she still needs to know more. Your child needs to read those chunks of sound in the right order, moving from the very first sound to the next and so on. The next activity draws your child's attention to the beginning sound in individual words, because that is where she needs to start on every word she reads. Ask her to listen to you say some words then have her repeat the first sound back to you.

Game 1: What is the first sound?

1. Listen to the words I say. Tell me the first sound you hear.

2. Bottle. What does bottle start with?

Computer. What does computer start with?

Sofa. What does sofa start with?

Popcorn?

Alec?

David?

....

3. When you have gone over these words, take turns thinking up new words. Your child may enjoy thinking up words and checking out your listening skills.
