Rhyme Time

Rhyme time is done by the group as a whole rather than each child answering individually.

Instruction

Step1

To warm up the children, start with telling this silly story below.

A fat cat sat on a blue shoe wondering what she could do. She saw a frog on a log that didn't want to play that day. Then a green machine roared past, and the fat cat hid under a flat hat in the red shed.

Step2

Point out that rhyming words sound alike at the end of the word. Have the children name all the rhyming words they can remember. Then say a word and have them brainstorm words that rhyme with it. Make most of the words easy to rhyme, such as "cat", "man", or "me", but also challenge them with a few tougher words, such as "flower","box", or "wrong".

Step3

Read familiar nursery rhymes or children's poems to the children, and have them pick out the rhyming words. For more of a challenge, stop reading before the second rhyming word and have the children supply it.
