Toddler Group Games

Toddler group games give children a time to run, clap, dance, and sing. It's so interesting to sit back and watch a group of toddler play. They have a funny little group dynamic. Some children focus exclusively on their own toys and scarcely notice other playmates. Others enjoy short moments of playing with other children and copying their hilarious play ideas. These "toddler group games" actually don't have rules, and they don't even require everyone's engagement. Simply think of these toddler group games as "play opportunities," and keep an open mind about the various ways the play might evolve.

Bubble-Clapper

I'll bet there is at least one or two bubble-clappers in the crowd just waiting to chase those elusive bubbles around the lawn.

Material Needed

Small of bubbles and bubble wand (for adults)

Instruction

You use the wand and bubble solution to blow bubbles, and your toddler tries to catch the bubbles by using his or her hands, or he or she claps them between two hands to make them pop. This is a simple but captivating game to play with toddlers.(older toddlers will enjoy playing outdoors and chasing the bubbles around the yard).

Walking the plank

This game combines the joys of physical and pretend play.

Material Needed

Wooden board

2 or 3 old beach towels

Instruction

In a safe, flat, grassy area, place the board on the ground. (For older toddler with better balance, roll or fold the beach towels and place them underneath the board at intervals to raise the plank by a couple of inches.)

Show the children to "walk the plank" without falling off the edge and see what happens!

Birthday wall painting

Start your child off early with this fun and easy group drawing game. It is a great way to keep the toddlers concentrated and out of the way while you set up the cake in the kitchen.

Material Needed

Roll of butcher paper or 4 to 5 paper grocery bags

Invisible tape

Large, unbreakable bowl

Big classification of chunky crayons.

Instruction

Wholly cover your kitchen table with butcher paper. Tape all the seams together to make one giant coloring surface and loosely tape the ends and sides to the table to hold it in place. Put the large bowl in the middle of the table and fill it with an classification of crayons. Start off the wall painting by drawing a birthday cake with one or two candles in the center of the paper.

Scribble-fest! If your child's attention starts to wander and the party needs some direction, have the parents trace their child's hand on the wall painting and write their child's name near the hand.

Ring Around the Rosy

Songs are a great way to bring people together.

Instruction

Have the adult and the children form a circle holding hands. As you sing the song (see below), everyone starts to move the circle in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. When you sing the last line of the song," We all fall down," you all suddenly sit down on the floor, This is always a giggly moment for the toddlers, who'll like to play over and over again.

Ring around the rosy

A pocket full of posies.

Ashes, ashes,

We all fall down!

Paint Party

The paint in this game is actually water! Paint party is always a crowd pleaser, and cleanup is over in the blink of an eyes.

Material Needed

Plastic buckets or dishpans

Chunky, round-handled exterior paintbrushes

Small paint rollers

Instruction

This game takes place on concrete patio or sidewalk. Fill the buckets or dishpans with a few inches of water. Place all the brushes and toddlers on the ground near the buckets. Show the toddlers how to pick up a brush and begin "painting" the patio surface or sidewalk; have another adults demonstrate how to use the roller.

Put your birthday party to work painting and rolling away
